Paul Mohr Photographs

About Paul

I was born in Marin County, California. Much of my early schooling was in San Francisco. My family moved to Sacramento and I graduated from California State University Sacramento with a teaching credential. I taught music, mainly in the Sacramento area, for the next 38 years.

I got started in photography in 1976 with a night class at the local high school. After learning the basics, I decided that once a week wasn't enough so I set up my own darkroom at home. At first, I was trying to use the appropriate film for each occasion, and as a result I wasn't able to develop any consistency. So eventually, I settled on Tri-X with the idea that I would learn its "habits" and tendencies in order to get the results I was looking for. HC110 is my film developer, and Zone VI chemicals are used for printing. I use 35mm, medium format and 4x5 view cameras. On occasion, I will use a Holga or a pinhole camera.

The prints on this site reflect the multiple areas of interest that I've been exploring over the past several years. Probably the two most prominent of these are naturally lit interiors and figure studies. I've attended the Gladding McBean Workshops where my interest was sparked by the challenges and rewards of natural interior lighting. My introduction to figure studies began with a series of outdoor figure workshops. Eventually I moved my figure photography to an indoor studio situation where I could control the background and lighting.
